Reading Bass Etudes is for the intermediate level reader. This new book is somewhat unique in that the material is a combination of technique study and reading practice.
Most etude books contain songs that are designed to develop and strengthen a specific technique, and typically require “working out” the rhythms, pitches, and shifts. This is the study part of the etude. Good reading books have material that focuses on various aspects of reading i.e. shifting, rhythms, pitch sets, and styles, but are not as difficult to perform as most etudes. Reading Bass Etudes could be called “etudes light,” as they are mostly written at a moderate level of difficulty, but will probably require some study to master.
While the notation can look simple on first glance, most of the examples contain a few “twists” to keep it challenging - odd length phrasing, unique interval leaps, changing key centers, multiple shifts, no two measures the same in a single example, etc.
Study of this material will greatly enhance your ability to read and play all over the fingerboard. I am confident these etudes will challenge you without stifling you.
